The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office would like to make everyone aware of a phone scam currently circulating that involves the sheriff’s office.
According to Montgomery County Sheriff David White his office was made aware of a phone call made to a local resident September 30 where the caller tried to collect sensitive information from the person.
The statement from the sheriff’s office shares that the caller identified themselves as “Deputy Marshal” and asked for banking and social security information. The caller also told the victim that they were being contacted by the sheriff’s office on behalf of the Social Security Administration.
The most deceptive part of the scam is that the phone number used by the caller showed to be the number for the sheriff’s office. The victim reported that the caller had a slight accent, but was unable to identify it.
Sheriff White wants everyone to know that the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will not contact anyone and ask for banking, or social security information. The sheriff’s office will not contact anyone on behalf of another organization to collect this information.
If you are contacted by this caller please do not give out any sensitive information over the phone.
Sheriff White stated that this call is being investigated as a scam and once again encourages everyone to not give out any sensitive information over the phone.
